Vada Aranyeswarar Temple at Thiruvalangadu is one the Padal Petra Sthalams. This temple is about 60 kms from Kathipara Junction. This place was once a forest of Banyan and hence the name Thiruvalangadu (Thiru + Alam + Kadu). Thiru means holy, Alam is Banyan and Kadu means forest. Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthy here. The Lord is facing East and His Consort Vandar Kuzhali Amman is in a separate shrine facing South. The theertham is Mukthi Theertham and the Sthala Vruksham is Alamaram or Banyan tree.

This is one of the Padal Petra Shalangal. This is also one of the Pancha Sabhais of Lord Shiva. This Rathna Sabai. There are five places where Nataraja, the dancing form of Lord Shiva, has performed his five cosmic dance forms, they are

Thiruvalangadu is where He performed the Oorthuva Thandavam and this is the Rathna Sabai.


There are a few legends associated with this temple. One of the legends of Thiruvalangadu is connected with Karaikal Ammaiyar. She attained moksham at the feet of Nataraja here. It is also here that she sang her Mootha Tirupathigam. Karaikkal Ammaiyar is one of the 63 nayanmars.

Karaikkal Ammaiyar was born as Punithavathiar in a Vaisya (Business) family. Her father Danadathan was a successful and prosperous businessman. He was childless and he and his wife prayed to Lord to be blessed with a child. The Lord was happy with their devotion and blessed them with a daughter. They named her Punithavathy. Punithavathy grew up as a very pious child. When she attained marriageable age she was married off to Paramadattan, a wealthy businessman. They were both leading a peaceful and happy married life until one day Paramadattan sent two mangoes to his house. Punithavathy kept them away to serve them to her husband during lunch. Meanwhile, a Siva yogi who was exhausted due to hunger came to their house. As was the custom in those days, Punithavathy did a paadha puja him and offered him the mangoes as alms or bhiksha, since she had nothing else to give him at that time. She gave one to the Siva Yogi and reserved the other for her husband. Punithavathy served Paramadattan the mango. He liked it a lot and asked if he could have the other also. Since she had already given the other mango to the Siva yogi, she prayed to the Lord for help and mysteriously a mango appeared on the palm of her hand, which she served to her husband. When he tasted it he was amazed by its extraordinary taste. He was sure that this was not the mango that he had sent and asked her where she got such a sweet mango. Paramadattan could not believe when Punithavathy told the truth. He thought that she was concocting a story and challenged her to get another mango. She then prayed to the Lord and another mango appeared on her palm, which she handed over to her husband. The mango disappeared immediately. An astonished Paramadattan understood the greatness of his wife and set sail to a far away land on the pretext of going for trade. He returned and settled down in the Pandya Kingdom. He married another woman and lived happily. He even named his daughter Punithavathy after his first wife. When Punithavathy’s relatives came to know about this, they took Punathavathy to her husband. When Paramadattan knew about her impending arrival, he took his wife and daughter to meet her and feel on her feet. He explained the reason why he left her. He said that he saw Punathavathy as a Goddess rather than an ordinary human being. Punithavathy then prayed to the Lord to give her a demoniac form instead of her present one. She was immediately granted the wish. She then went on a Pilgrimage to Kailash. She traveled the last part of the journey on her head since she thought that placing her foot in Mount Kailash was disrespectful to Lord Shiva and a sin. Lord Shiva was highly delighted with Punithavathiyar’s dedication and He conferred the title of “Karaikkal Ammaiyar” on her. He also granted a boon to her. She wished that she should not have any more rebirth and in the event of a rebirth she should always be devoted to the Lord. She also wanted to be at His feet and witness His dance, always singing His praise. Lord Shiva asked her to go to Thiruvalangadu to witness His dance. Accordingly she went to Thiruvalangadu and witnessed His dance and also attained moksham.

Sumban and Nisumban were two demons who lived here were harassing the Devas or Demi Gods. They appealed to Goddess Parvathi to help them. Goddess parvathi created Kali to destroy the demons. When Kali killed the demons, every drop of their blood that fell on the ground would produce another demon. Kali had to drink all the blood of the demons She killed. Since Kali consumed the blood of the demons when she killed them, She became even more furious. Lord Shiva came here to pacify Her. Kali challenged Lord Shiva for a dance competition and said that she would give up the place to the Lord if He won. During the dance, His ear ring fell on the ground. Lord Shiva picked it up with the toes of His left leg and fixed it back in his ear, even while He was still dancing. Kali conceded that she could not dance so marvelously and declared Lord Shiva to be the winner. Lord Shiva declared that He only was equal to Her. He bestowed a boon on Her that all devotees coming to this holy place should first worship Her before worshiping Lord Shiva. This temple dedicated to Badra Kali Amman is just outside the Vada Aranyeswarar Temple.

This is the temple to be worshipped by people under Bharani Nakshathiram regularly. By doing so they would lead a peaceful and happy life. The other temple for people born under Bharani Nakshathiram is Sri Agneeswarar Temple at Thirunalladai, Tamil Nadu. It is even better if they visit these temples on the day of Bharani Nakshathiram.

Across the temple tank is the Thirumulanayaki sametha Muktheeswarar Temple in the Rasi Mandapam which has twelve pillars and the Janma Rasis and Navagraha images can be seen on those pillars. One has to either walk or go by two wheeler to reach this temple. There is a cement track along the periphery of the temple tank and you can comfortably ride by a two wheeler or probably even a three wheeler. It is a bit difficult to go by car. You have to take the mud track adjoining the cement track. I was adventurous and went by car and lucky not to have a flat tyre.

Worship Benefits

It is said that Mandhi the son of Saneeswaran was in penance and a lizard fell on him and it indicated a bad omen. He asked his father how he could get rid of the dosham. Saneeswaran asked him to pray to Lord Shiva and accordingly he prayed to Lord Shiva. The Lord appeared before him and asked him to do puja for a mandalam (48 days) at Thiruvalangadu. He installed a Lingam here and performed the puja to get rid of the dosham. The information on Mandheeswarar Parihara Puja is given in the image below in Tamil. It is recommed to do the parihara puja on Saturdays since Mandhi is the son of Saneeswaran who is the Lord of Saturdays. You can perform the puja to get rid of the malefic effects of ashtama Sani and Ardhasthtama Sani. It also gets rid of the malefic effects of Mandhi present in the wrong place of the person’s horoscope. The parihara puja is also believed to remove marriage obstacles, childless will be blessed with progeny, improvement of financial status and students will do well in their academics.

Lord Shiva here is one of the 64 swayambhu lingams. The Lord faces West in this temple. This village is the birthplace of Manakanjarar, one of the 63 Shaivite Nayanmars. Krithika nymphs who took care of Lord Muruga are also believed to be born here. This is believed to be the temple where those born under Krithika Nakshathiram are to pray regularly for a trouble-free life. Visiting on the day of Krithika Nakshathiram is said to do immense good to those born under the star.

The legend associated with the temple goes thus. Tarakasura, after severe Tapasya or penance to please Brahma, wanted the boon of being immortal, undying and invincible. Brahma could not grant this boon as it would make the demon all-powerful. So, Tarakasura added a condition that he may be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva. Tarakasura added this condition because, at that time Lord Shiva was in a state of Self-imposed exile. Sati had burnt her body in Daksha’s Yajna and since then Lord Shiva had gone into this state. So, Tharakasura reasoned that and there was no way that Lord Shiva was going to come out of this in the near future and thereby it was impossible for Him to beget a child. Emboldened by this boon, he attacked the Devas regularly.

The worried gods came to Lord Vishnu seeking a solution. They were asked by Lord Vishnu to get Lord Shiva out of the reclusive state. Meanwhile, Sati was born as daughter of Himavan, the Mountain-King. She was named Girija or Parvati.

The Gods came up to Himavan and made him agree to give his daughter Girija in marriage to Lord Shiva. Himavan took his daughter Girija to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva did not agree to the proposal. Girija protested and got into a tapas to get married to Lord Shiva.

The Gods now approached Kamadeva or the God of Love to distract Lord Shiva from His ascetic state.  Kamadeva was reduced to ashes in his endeavor when Lord Shiva opened His third eye and was burnt by the Rays arising from it. When Lord Shiva came to know of the facts and the circumstances that lead to Kamadeva’s misadventure, He pardoned Kamadeva and reinstated him.

Lord Shiva in the meanwhile, tested Parvati’s devotion to Him when He went to Her in the guise of a a young Brahmachari and asked Her to marry Him. She declined. Lord Shiva was satisfied and granted her the boon. Now the intensity of the rays emanating from Lord Shiva was so powerful that it could potentially devour the whole Universe. Agni was entrusted with the mission of disquieting the Lord’s privacy to save the Universe. Agni sneaked into the Lord’s private room and asked for alms. An angry Lord lifted his Trident to obliterate Agni but was calmed by Parvati. Parvati went in and reappeared with the offering of Bhiksha by when Agni appeared in his original form. Parvati was infuriated and cursed him and to be all-devouring.

In the early hours of a cold winter morning, in the month of Karthika, Agni was blazing on the Banks of the Ganga. The wives of the Rishis had come for their morning bath. The cold was overwhelming and they went to Agni to warm themselves. As they reached the proximity of the fire they were all impregnated. The rays of Lord Shiva entered their bodies and Agni was released.

Unable to bear the heat, these rays were thrown into the Ganga by them.  These rays were cooled by Ganga and a six-headed child was born. This child was known as Shanmukha or Karthikeya and a variety of other names. He is revered and famous as Muruga in South India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. Elsewhere, He is probably not accorded the same importance that is given to Him in these places. He is especially prayed by the Tamils all over the world.

Karthikeya was made the ‘Senapati’ or the leader of the army of the Gods. Karthikeya waged war or Tarakasura and killed him.

As per Kandha Puranam, the origin of Karthikeya’s is different. Rays of fire emanated from Lord Shiva’s third eye and fell on six lotuses in a lake called Saravana Pogai. These six balls of fire then changed into six charming children. Krithika nymphs or Karthigai penngal as they are called in Tamil, were sent by Lord Vishnu to take care of the Six children and nourish them as their own. On hearing this, Lord Shiva and Parvati arrived here. As soon as Parvati embraced the six children,they became one child with six heads and twelve hands.

It is believed that the ray of golden light emerged from the Lord here and hence this place came to be known as Kanchana Nagar, Kanchana meaning gold. The present name Kanjanagaram is a corruption of this. The Lord here is known as Gathra Sundareswarar or Karthika Sundareswarar. Since this place is associated with the birth of Lord Muruga and the Karthika Nymphs, it has special relevance for the people born under the Krithika Star.

His Consort here is Thungabalasthanambigai. She is seen holding a Nilotpal flower or blue lotus, discus and conch. Supposedly Lord Shiva himself, in the form of a parrot is seen on Her left Shoulder. Darshan of the Goddess and this parrot on Pradosham days is believed to bless the devotee with a happy marital life.


Kanjanagaram is at a distance of 4.3 km from Sembanar Koil. It is 41.7 kms away from Nagapattinam. It is at a distance of 6.5 kms from Mayiladuthurai and 12.5 Kms from Sirkazhi. Thiruvaneswarar temple at Ranganathapuram near Thirukattupalli is the temple to be visited by people born under Pooratadhi, Purva Bhadrapada or Poorva Bhadra Nakshathiram (Birth Star) at least once in a year for leading a trouble free and happy life.  This temple was built by Kochengat Cholan and is believed to be at least 1800 years old.

Kochengat Cholan was a staunch Shiva devotee and is one amongst the 63 Nayanmars or Great Devotees of Lord Shiva.  Kochengat Cholan built or rebuilt at least 70 temples.  These temples that he built were at an elevation so as to prevent elephants from entering the temple.  There is an interesting story as to why Kochengat Cholan did this.  Thiruvanaikaval, near Trichy, was once a Jambu (Indian Blackberry) forest.  (Jamoon in Hindi, Nagapazham in Tamil).  There was a Shiv Lingam under one of the Jambu trees which was worshiped by a Spider and an Elephant.  The Elephant used to bring water in its trunk from the Cauvery to perform the ablution while the Spider displayed its devotion by weaving a web over the Lingam to protect dust and dry leaves from falling onto the Lingam.  The Elephant which considered the web as dirty used to remove the web everyday and the Spider used to weave the web again. Each of them considered the act of the other as an act of desecration.  Soon the two had a fight and both of them died.  The spider was reborn as Kochengat Cholan.  Since Kochengat Cholan or Kochenganan remembered his previous life and the “havoc” caused by the elephant, he decided to build temples which could not be accessed and disturbed by the Elephants. He called this “Yaanai Era thiruppani”.  The first of such temples he built was at Thiruvanaikaval itself – Jambukeswarar Temple.  The temple at Ranganathapuram could well be the second of those temples.

Between 1311 AD and 1373 AD, there were a few attacks by Mohammedans led by Malik Gafoor on Srirangam.  Srirangam was under Mohammedan rule for some time, when the main idols at Srirangam and Thiruvanaikaval temples were brought to this village and kept hidden.  Those idols were returned to the respective temples after Pandyas defeated the Mohammedans and regained control over Srirangam.  As commemoration of these events, this village has since then been known as Ranganathapuram or Gajaranyam (Anaika).

The temple is built on top of the idol of an elephant, hence Lord Shiva is also known as Gaja Aaraohana Eswarar or one who rides an elephant.  In this temple, elephant is Lord Shiva’s vehicle.  The other names of the presiding deity at this temple are Gajaranyeswarar, Aneswarar, Karivananathar & Anaikaraperumanar.  His consort is Kamakshi Ambal.  The sacred tree or the sthala vruksham here is vilvam (a type of wood apple).  Vajra theertham, Indira koobam is the theertham.  Iravatham, Indiran’s elephant was once in deep penance here.  Indiran who came in search of Iravatham was angry and use Vajrayutham on the elephant.  By the grace of Lord Shiva the weapon fell on the ground here harmlessly.  Water sprang from the place where the vajrayudham fell and that became vajra theertham.  The well inside the temple is known as Indira Koobam.  Indiran repented his act and sought forgiveness.  Kanchi Acharya, His Holiness Chandrasekhara Saraswathy was captivated by the beauty of the place and stayed here for a few days.  There is a small mandapam built to signify this event.

The main deity faces East and His consort faces South.  There is an idol of Vinayakar in a separate shrine in the south west corner of the praharam (circumambulatory path).  The style and architecture suggests that this was built by the Pallavas.  The vinayakar is valampuri vinayakar.  He is seen as though he is resting his left hand on the ground and raising to His feet.  There is shrine for Murugan along with Valli and Devayanai.  There is also a shrine for Mahalakshmi.  In the North East corner there is a separate shrine for the navagrahas.

Donating clothes of seven different colours at this temple is believed to absolve one of all the sins.

Location: This temple is located at 4 kms from Thirukattupalli and about 40 Kms from Trichy and 30 Kms from Tanjore.  Grand Anicut is about 15 Kms from this place and is a good picnic spot.

Mangalambigai Sametha Mangalyeswarar Koil at Edaiyathumangalam is the temple that people born under Uthiram star have to visit regularly.  This is the third temple that I am writing about in this series of “Birth Star Temples or Nakshathiram Temples”.  This temple is special to me as my forefathers hail from this village – my native place.  Unfortunately, during my last visit in January, my camera malfunctioned and I am unable to post photographs of this temple.  I shall post a couple of snaps after my next visit to this temple.

This place is called Edaiyathumangalam as it was once situated between two rivers; Aaru means, river and Edai means, in between. Mangalyeswarar (as Lord Shiva is known at this temple) is present with His Consort Mangalambigai.  Mangalyeswarar is facing East while Mangalambigai is facing South.  This is quite a small temple and has shrines for Vinayakar, Mangalya Maharishi, Dakshinamurthy, Bitchandar, Ardhanareeswarar, Chandikeswarar, Durgai, Nandi and Navagrahas.  Lord Muruga is also present with His Consorts, Valli and Deivayanai.

The Legend here is connected with Mangalya Maharishi who was born under Uthiram Nakshathiram.  Marriages of Agasthiyar, Vashishtar and Bhairava Maharishis were conducted under his aegis.  He is supposed to have all the powers of his penance in his palms.  He is the Guru of the Angels that bless the marriages.  At the auspicious time that is suitable for marriage, these Angels are believed to be visiting this temple to pray to Mangalyeswarar and re-energise their power to bless married women with a long & happy marital life.  Their blessings are always at the peak during Uthira nakshathiram.  It is because of this reason that the Kalyana Utsavam or the Celestial Wedding of the God and Goddess are held during Uthiram nakshathiram day in the Tamil month of Panguni.  Panguni Uthiram is an important part of the calendar in most temples.

Young unmarried women – especially those born under Uthiram – pray at this temple seeking Lord’s blessing for early marriage, removal of hurdles causing delay in marriage, long & happy marital life.  Mangalya Maharishi is the First invitee when the marriage alliance is finalised.  Devotees place the First Invitation of the marriage at the feet of Mangalya Maharishi and invite him to grace the marriage and bless the young couple.  Mangalya Maharishi is believed to attend the marriage and bless the newly weds.  After the marriage the newly weds visit this temple for thanks-giving.  Married women pray for longevity of their Husband’s life.  Elderly and destitute who have been deserted by their children are reunited with their family after worship here. People suffering from chronic pain in their feet are relived of their ailment after prayers to Mangalyeswarar.

Edayathumangalam is at a distance of about 18 Kms from Trichy.  There are a couple of buses viz Route nos 75 & 75 A from Trichy Chathiram Bus Stand to Lalgudi that pass through Edaiyathumangalam. Edaiyathumangalam is at a distance of about 5 Kms from Lalgudi.  Autos charge about Rs.70/- for a one way trip from Lalgudi.

Those going by their own mode of transport need not go up to Lalgudi.  You will find an arch on the right hand side just after Valadi, take a right turn there and this road will lead you to Edaiyathumangalam.

Lakshmipureeswarar temple is at Thiruninriyur.  Thiruninriyur is about 6.5 Kms from Vaitheeswaran Koil on the way to Mayiladuthurai or Mayavaram. This is a Padal Petra Sthalam.  This is an East facing Mada temple, meaning it is built over a raised platform.  The main deity is Lakshmipureeswarar and his Consort is Ulaganayaki.  The Lingam here is one of the 64 Swayambhu Lingams. Lakshmi and Vishnu have worshipped Lord Shiva here.  Lakshmi was granted the boon of winning Vishnu’s heart, hence the name Lakshmipureeswaraar.  Lord Shiva here is known as Mahalakshmeesar also. There are separate shrines for Vinayakar, Murugan, Mahalakshmi, the Navagrahas, Bhairavar, Chandran and the Shivalingam worshipped by Parasurama.

The Sanskrit name for this place is Varthi Nirvapanapuram, which means Tirininravur in Tamil.  Tiri means wick and ninravur means place where it was put off.  A Chola King used to pass through Thiruninriyur every night after worshiping at Sirkali.  As he was passing through this village, the lamps carried by his entourage used to go off. Intrigued, he wanted to check it out and went to the same place in the morning.  He saw Kamadhenu descending into the forest.   He proceeded to the spot where Kamadhenu had descended. He cleared the bushes with his sword and made his way through the thicket.  While doing so, his sword hit something and he saw blood sprouting from  that particular spot.  He spotted a Shiva Lingam in the undergrowth, from which the blood was oozing.  The hole that the Chola King inadvertently made on top of the Shiva Lingam is still seen.  He built a temple at the same spot which is now Lakshmipureeswarar Temple at Thiruninriyur.

This temple is to be visited for gaining Kubera Sampathu or prosperity. While Kubera is the Lord of Wealth and is responsible for the distribution of the same, Goddess Lakshmi is the creator of wealth.  In other words Kubera is the treasurer while the Goddess is the CFO.  Goddess Lakshmi is one of the most worshipped deities. She is the Goddess of prosperity, wealth, purity, generosity, and the embodiment of beauty, grace and charm.

Lakshmi is usually seen sitting or standing on a lotus in the ocean of milk symbolising purity, peace and prosperity. Her four arms signify Purity, Prosperity, Perfection and Freedom from bondage.  The gold coins flowing out of her hand signifies prosperity. Her right hand is in abhayahastha mudra or hand held in the posture of blessing.

This temple is one amongst the temples dedicated for each of the 27 Nakshatrams or Birth-stars.  This temple is dedicated to Anusham.  People born under this star greatly benefit by worshiping here at least once every year.

This temple has very few visitors and is relatively unknown.  The temple is maintained by the Dharumapuram Adhinam.

Karkadeswarar temple at Thirundudevankudi is a fairly big temple surrounded by a moat.  It is in the midst of paddy fields.  There are only paddy fields as far as you can see.

According to the temple legend, Indran worshipped this Lingam here with 1008 Lotuses everyday.  Varunan was given the task of creating those flowers in the temple moat.  Indran ran short of a flower during pooja one day.  He enquired with Varunan who was very confident that he had created 108 flowers.  When this continued for a few days, Indran himself decided to keep a watch on the flowers. Ultimately, he noticed one of the flowers moving.  The flower moved out of the water and into the garba graham (sanctum sanctorum) through the drain onto the top of the Shivalingam.  On closer scrutiny, he saw that it was a Golden crab that had brought the flower from the waters.  As he was about to hit the crab, it made a hole right on top of the Shivalingam and disappeared into it.  Since then He came to be known as Karkadeswarar (Karkata means Crab).  The image of a golden crab as well as the hole created by it can be seen on the Shivalingam during the ablution rituals (abhishegam).  Thirundudevankudi could well be corruption of Thiru Nandu Devakankudi; Nandu meaning crab.  It is believed that this Crab was a Yaksha who taunted Sage Dhurvasa.  He mimicked the walk of the Sage and said that it was like the crawl of a crab and made fun of him.  The Sage who was well known for his short temper, cursed the Yaksha to turn into a crab.  Quickly realising his folly, the Yaksha apologised to the Sage and sought a remedy.  The Sage advised him to worship Lord Shiva at this temple for absolution of his sin.

This place was originally an Aushada vanam or forest of medicinal herbs.  During the ancient times this place could have been a Ayurvedic Dispensary.  Lord Shiva here was originally called Aushadeswarar.

Another legend is that of Shiva, in the guise of an old man, having cured a devout King of his painful affliction.  Hence He got the name Arumarundu Devar, the Lord of Medicine and Healing. He then showed him the spot where the Shivalingam is currently located.

There are two shrines to Ambal here, Arumarundu Nayaki and Apoorva Nayaki. The idol of Arumarundu Nayaki was once stolen.  The stolen idol was recovered within a day of installing the replacement idol.  Hence the original idol then came to be known as Apoorva Nayaki. The moat surrounding the temple is the Tirumaruvum Poikai.
