Financial abundance is of great importance to every human being. Good Health & Happiness (peace of mind) are the other two of the three foremost things that man prays to his Creator to bestow him with. Padikkasunathar temple at Alagaputhur near Kumbakonam is one such temple where the presiding deity blesses His devotees with financial prosperity. The main deity here is also known as Swarnapureeswarar. His consort at this temple is Alagammai or Azhagammai. The deity taken out in processions (Utsavar) during festivals is Somaskandar. The sthala vruksham is vilva. The Shiva Linga is a swayam bhu or self manifested. Alagaputhur is on the banks of the river Arasalar. The old name for this place is Arisilkaraipudur. This three tiered temple is believed to be about 2000 years old.

The priest at this temple was a staunch Shiva devotee who performed the daily pooja with great devotion along with all the customary offerings. Famine and poverty struck the whole region that was once prosperous. In spite of his poverty and the difficulty he had in making the ends meet, he never shirked from his “responsibility” of performing the daily poojas to the Lord. Please with his devotion, one night the Lord appeared in his dreams and granted a boon.  The priest wished that the village must become prosperous once again and that he himself should have enough to continue performing the daily poojas without any hurdle. As per his wish Lord Shiva left him one gold coin at the steps of the temple everyday. The priest used this to take care of the villagers and also to perform the daily pooja. Soon the famine was gone and the village became prosperous once again.

The descendents of that noble priest are still the priests at this temple.  The priest performed the padikasu pooja for us. We handed to him an even number of ten rupee notes for the pooja. After performing the pooja the priest gave us back half of them (that is the reason for taking even number of currency notes). The money retained by the priest is utilized for temple maintenance etc. The priest asked us to preserve the currency notes he gave us and also issued detailed instructions on performing poojas at home using these. Devotees believe that performing this ritual will bring prosperity.

Lord Muruga here is very unique. He is seen with the Conch and Discus that one normally associates with Mahavishnu. The story goes that it is the Conch and Discus given by Lord Vishnu to Muruga when He set out to wage a war on the demons. He is seen sitting on a peacock with His consorts Valli and Deivayanai. Since Muruga appears with both His consorts He is known as Kalyanasundara Shanmuga Subramanyar. The decoration in the background is in the form of Om.

Talking of Om, there is a story linking this temple to the Swaminatha Swamy temple at Swamimalai. Once Lord Brahma, the Creator was asked how he created life in the Universe. Lord Brahma replied that he used the Pranava Mantra. When Lord Muruga further asked Lord Brahma the meaning of the Pranava Mantra, Lord Brahma was stumped for an answer. An angry Muruga imprisoned Him and stripped Him of the responsibility of creation. He took upon the responsibility Himself. Lord Shiva approached Muruga and requested Him to free Brahma and reinstate Him as the creator. He also wanted to know the meaning of the Pranava Mantra. Lord Muruga taught Lord Shiva the meaning of this mantra at Swami Malai. Later, when Lord Shiva appealed to Lord Muruga again, He relented. He was also remorseful for having punished and insulted an elder for his ignorance. Lord Muruga performed penance on Lord Shiva at this temple and sought forgiveness. Lord Shiva pardoned Him and said that while pointing out of mistakes committed by the elders can be accepted, you should take sufficient care to ensure that it does not offend the elders.

This is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams and all the four Great Saints have sung hymns in praise of the Lord at this temple.

This village is just about 2.5 Kames from Nachiyar Kovil on the Kumbakonam-Nachiyar Kovil-Tiruvarur route. It is about 7 Kms from Kumbakonam. This temple is almost on the State Highway. It is just a two-minute walk from the highway. The bus services are frequent and is well connected with the important places around here.

Vaitheeswaran Koil is my family’s “kula deivam”. A few months back my uncle told me about Adhi Vaidhyanatha Swamy Temple near Vaitheeswaran Koil and mentioned that we should first pray at that temple before we offer prayers at Vaitheeswaran Koil. I visited this temple at Mannipallam village, in August 2010 and it was partially built. The main deity is Vaithyanatha Swamy and His consort here is Thayyalnayaki. Mannipallam village is about 6 Kms from Vaitheeswaran Koil. This village is about 2 to 3 kms from Thirupungur. Enquiries with the locals to know more about the temple drew a blank. I had an opportunity to visit this temple again in early October 2010. I enquired at Vaitheeswaran Koil and one of the priests told me that there were in fact five Vaithyanatha Swamy temples around Vaitheeswaran Koil and that they had featured in the latest edition of Sakthi Vikatan. Someone overheard my conversation with the priest and directed me to the temple office and meet Mr. Ramani, who is an electrician there. Mr. Ramani hails from Mannipallam and what he told me was very painful. He said that the village people could not rebuild the temple due to lack of funds and the temple was in ruins for a long time.

He was not sure if there were any tablets/inscriptions available to authenticate that this was the original site of Vaitheeswaran Koil. “Most of  the granite slabs with the inscriptions have been used by the villagers in their paddy fields to build bunds. Some others have been taken away to be used in washing the clothes”. Some of the idols from here had been removed and used in some nearby temples. He said that anti social elements started using the temple premises for their nefarious activities. According to Mr. Ramani, on one occasion when a village elder questioned these people’s behaviour, one of those hooligans smashed the idol of Ambal with a heavy object and Ambal’s hand was broken in the process. Within a fortnight or so of this incident, the person whose broke Ambal’s idol was involved in an accident and lost one of his hands. This, according to Mr. Ramani, made the villagers believe very strongly in the temple Deity. The villagers then decided that the temple has to be re-built. Efforts towards this was initiated around 2002.

When they started to re-build this temple and the Shiva Lingam was removed, they found a second Shiva Lingam below this. Both the Shiva Lingams are now present in this temple. Mr. Ramani gave me the contact details of one Mr. Paramanathan, also a native of this village and a TN State Govt official. Mr. Paramanathan has been the champion for building the temple. Over the last eight years or so there has not been much progress made, mainly due to lack of funds.

Vaiyam Kaththa Perumal Temple at Thirukoodalur is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The name Thirukoodalur or Koodalur is not well known now.  If you want to ask for directions, ask for Aduthurai Perumal Koil.  this Aduthurai is not to be confused with the Aduthurai near Thiruvidaimarudhur.  There are a group of Vaishnava temples around Kumbakonam which are considered navagraha Parihara sthalams.  This did come as a surprise to me because the Vaishnavites do not believe in navagraha worship.  This is the Kethu parihara sthalam. There is a prominent board in this temple that authenticates this.  The Moolavar (Main Deity) is known as Vaiyam Kaththa Perumal and the Utsavar (Deity taken out in procession during festivals) is Jagatrakshakan.  His consort here is Padmasanavalli.  The sacred tree (Sthala Vruksham) is the Jackfruit tree.  The Palamaran (Jack fruit tree) at this temple is very unique as you can see a huge formation on the tree that resembles a sangu (conch).   This tree is known as sangu pathintha palamaram.

The Lord at Aduthurai Perumal Koil is seen with his discus ready to leave His hand.  He is known as Prayoga Chakradari.  A king by name Ambarishan was a devout Vaishnavite.  In his devotion to Lord Vishnu he neglected his kingdom.  As a result he lost his kingdom to the neighbouring king.  Undeterred, the king continued his service to Vishnu.  Once when he was in a deep state of meditation, Durvasa Maharishi came to meet him.  The king who was immersed in his prayers to Lord Vishnu did not notice the sage.  Durvasa Maharishi felt insulted by this act of King Ambarishan and cursed him.  A shaken Ambarishan prayed to Lord Vishnu seeking his help.  Mahavishnu was angry with Durvasa Maharrishi for punishing His devotee for no fault of his.  Mahavishnu used the discus intending to cut off the Sage’s head.  Before any damage could be done, the Sage realised his folly and apologised to the Lord.  As a mark of gratitude, Ambarishan built a temple at the same spot where the current Aduthurai Perumal Koil is located.  The Lord is also known as Ambarisha Varadar after King Ambarishan.  Devotees who pray at Aduthurai Perumal Koil are believed to be protected by the discus of Vishnu.

Bathing in the holy rivers, according to Hindu scriptures, washes away one’s sins.  These holy rivers that accumulate the sins washed away by the people purify themselves by having a dip in the Cauvery.   Cauvery who accumulated all the sins approached Brahma for a solution to the problem.  Brahma directed Cauvery to pray to Lord Vishnu at this sacred place and accordingly Cauvery was purified.  Praying at Aduthurai Perumal Koil is believed to absolve the devotees of all their sins and enable to attain Moksham or Salvation.

Offerings of Kalkandu (Rock Sugar – wonder if that is the correct translation) and butter are made to the Lord.  The benefits of making these offerings are abundant wealth and marital bliss.

Nandhaga Munivar came to this holy place accompanied by all the Devas.  Koodal in tamil means together.  Since they all came together this place came to be known as Thirukoodalur.

It is believed that this is the place where Mahavishnu incarnated as the Boar (Varaha Avatharam) and prevents the Earth from sinking into the ocean. Hiranyaksha, a demon was granted a  boon by that he shall neither be killed by a man nor beast nor God. Emboldened by this boon, Hiranyaksha embarks on a destruction spree and pushes the Earth into the sea. He does not spare even Brahma, his benefactor.  While Brahma is fast asleep he steals the Vedas from Him. The Devas plead to Mahavishnu to put an end to the cruelty.  Mahavishnu takes the Varaha Avtaram and lifts the Earth from the ocean with the help of his tusks. He then kills Hiranyaksha and salvages the Veda from him.  Since He saved the world from extinction, He is known as Vaiyam Kattha Perumal or Jagatrakshakan.

The original temple built by Ambarishan was washed away by floods.  Mahavishnu appeared in the dream of Rani Mangammal of Madurai and asked her to build a new temple for Him.  The present temple is the one built by her.  In one of the Pillars of the temple you can see the image of Rani Mangammal.

There is an interesting story behind Brahma not having many temples dedicated to Him.  Once, Vishnu and Brahma had a dispute as to who amongst the two was superior.  They approached Shiva and asked Him to play Judge.  Shiva then appeared as a huge Lingam and said that whichever of the two saw the feet and the head of the Lingam and returned first would be adjudged superior to the other.  Brahma took the form of a Swan and went in search of the head while Vishnu took the form of a Boar and dug into the earth to reach the feet.  Vishnu accepted defeat and returned. Brahma was not the one to accept defeat so easily.  He saw a Thazhampu or Ketaki (common name – Fragrant screw pine) coming down.  On enquiry the flower said that it was coming from top of the Shiva Lingam.  Brahma enlisted the flower to testify before Shiva that Brahma had indeed reached the top of the Lingam.  When they both approached Shiva and claimed Brahma’s victory, Shiva was very angry with Brahma for having told a lie and with Ketaki flower for false testimony about Brahma’s “discovery” of the top of the Lingam.  He cursed them both.  He cursed that henceforth Brahma would not be worshipped and would not have Temples built for Him.  He also cursed the flower that it would not be used in any religious ritual.  There are possibly just a couple of temples where Brahma is the main deity.  There are a few other temples where Brahma is given importance and has separate shrine.  Thirupattur or Thirupidavur near Trichy is one such temple.

In my earlier post on Uthamar Koil or Bitchandar Koil and Thiru Kandiyur, I had narrated the story of Brahma’s fifth head being plucked off by Shiva and the travails of Shiva due this act and finally His absolution.  This temple at Thirupattur is connected with that same story.  Brahma went on Pilgrimage of Shiva temples after He lost His fifth head and also being stripped of the responsibility of creation.  In the course of His pilgrimage, Lord Brahma also visited this temple and installed 12 lingams around Bramhapureeshwarar and worshipped Shiva here for a very long time.  Shiva, on Parvathy’s recommendation liberated Brahma from the curse and restored the power and responsibility of creation to Brahma. Shiva also blessed Brahma that He would have a separate shrine at this temple. He also instructed Brahma that since Brahma himself had His destiny rewritten here for the better; Brahma should rewrite the destinity of His devotees visiting this temple. While Shiva was absolved of the Brahmahatti dosham at Bitchandar Koil and Thiru Kandiyur, Brahma was absolved of His sin here.

The 12 Lingams of Lord Shiva which were installed by Brahma are Sri Bhramapureeswara, Sri Pazamalainathar, Sri Pathalaeswarar, Sri Sudharaneeswarar, Sri Thayumannar, Sri Sabthagereswarar, Sri Kalathinathar, Sri Jambukeswarar, Sri Kailasanathar, Sri Arunachaleeswarar, Sri Ekambreswarar, Sri Manduganathar.  These lingams housed in separate shrines are seen around the Brahma theertham.  Brahma theertham is the pond from which Brahma took the water for performing puja to Shiva.

Since Lord Shiva absolved Brahma of His sins, He is known as Brahmapureeswarar in this temple.  The lingam here is a Swayambhu (self manifested) lingam.  His consort here is called Brahma Sampath Gowri (The one who gave Brahma’s wealth back) or BrahmaNayagi.

Brahma’s shrine is in the circumambulatory corridor of Brahmapureeswarar’s shrine.  The 6 ft tall deity with an eternal covering of turmeric paste or manjal kappu can be seen in padmasana posture on a lotus.

The Jeeva Samadhi of Patanjali Munivar is located near Brahma’s shrine.  A pathala lingam is also located close the shrine.

There are seven doorways through which we have to go before reaching the sanctum sanctorum of Brahmapureeswarar, which is at a distance of 300 metres from the main entrance. What is amazing is that the main deity is clearly visible from the main entrance. That’s not all. The Sun’s rays still can fall directly on the Shivalingam for three days every year viz., 15th, 16th and 17th of the Tamil month Panguni. These dates are approximately the 3rd, 4th and 5th of April.

Thirupattur (or Thirupidavur) is around 35 km from Trichy on the Trichy – Chennai Highway.  While driving from Trichy, take a left near Siruganur and the temple is about 6 km here.  It is at a distance of about 16 km from Samayapuram (Mariamman temple).

To recap from my earlier post on Bitchandar Koil or Uthamar Koil, Shiva was afflicted with Brahmahatti Dosham due to His act of plucking off Brahma’s fifth head.   He was partly absolved of the sin at Bitchandar Koil.  His hunger was satisfied at Bitchandar Koil but Brahma’s skull was still stuck to his palm.  To attain complete absolution of His sin, Vishnu instructed Shiva to worship Him (Vishnu) at Thirukandiyur after a bath in the temple tank.  Shiva went to Thirukandiyur and did accordingly and was absolved of the sin.  The temple tank since then has come to be known as kapala theertham.  In my next post on Brahmapureeswarar temple at Tirupattur, we shall see how Brahma was absolved of His sin.

I can’t resist deviating from the central topic for a short while.  It is to be noted that though Shiva himself is God, He still cannot escape from the effects of His sins.  Time and again, there are several stories in our Puranas where Gods have had to undergo suffering due to their sins.  The purpose is to stress the doctrine of moral responsibility. It is to imbibe into our mind that like everything else in this universe is governed by law; all things that happen to us also are governed by a law.  Every human being is governed by this law known as ‘Law of Karma”.  The modern Management Gurus have termed this Law as “Law of Cause & Effect”.  Karma is nothing but our actions, thoughts, feelings and emotions.  Our Karmas are responsible for our past, present, and future experiences. All Karma (our actions, thoughts, feelings and emotions) should have a Karma Palan (reaction).  So, if your Karma is good, it is bound to have good result.  In other words, our thoughts, actions, beliefs, emotions manifest into our experience.  We act only after the thoughts first come to our mind.  All that we are is the result of what we have thought, it is founded on our thoughts, and it is made up of our thoughts. Each individual is what he is because of everything that he thinks, feels and does.  Your thoughts and emotions, no matter how secret they are, have an effect on your circumstances, situations and people around you.  Be aware of your thoughts and emotions as they also have an effect on you.

Thus each one of us is responsible for all the happenings (both Good and Bad) in our lives.  It also means that we can take control of our circumstances and situations by changing the way we think.  Change your thoughts by using positive words in present tense (as though you already are what you want to be) and using positive goals.  Meditate on your goal everyday until you have achieved it.

Coming back to the topic on Thirukandiyur temple, Shiva as an act of gratitude built a temple for Vishnu here and also a temple for himself.  Vishnu is known by the name, Harasaaba Vimochanar, which literally means one who absolved Shiva or Haran of His Sins.  Vishnu’s consort here is Kamalavalli thayar.  Devotees throng the temple seeking atonement for their sins.  Shiva here is known by the name, Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar or one who plucked off Brahma’s head. His consort is Mangala Nayaki. There was a separate temple for Brahma here.  It is now in a dilapidated condition and the idols of Brahma and Saraswati are housed in a separate shrine at the Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar temple.  The postion of the navagraha in this temple is unique.  Suryan is present with His two consorts, Usha & Chaya.  The rest of the navagrahas face Suryan.

This is one of the 108 Divyadesams and also one of the 275 Padal petra sthalams.

The Shiva temple here is one of the Ashta Veeratta sthalams.  The eight temples are as follows

In the Tamil month of Vaikasi the act of Shiva punishing Brahma is enacted.

Nandi’s marriage took place at Thirumazhapadi near here.  As per the Hindu marriage ritual the couple goes around the ceremonial fire seven times.  Shiva took the newly wed couple to seven Shiva temples around Thiruvaiyar.  These seven temples are known as saptha sthanams.  This group of temples is very close to each other and can be covered in one session.  In the tamil month of Chittirai, the Deity (Utsavar) of Thiruvaiyar is carried on a palanquin to all these temples.  This is a very important festival in these temples around Thiruvaiyar.  These seven temples to be visited in order as follows:

My next three posts are all interlinked.  These are about Bitchandar Koil, Thirukandiyur and Tirupattur. Before I start, I should acknowledge that I came to know about the temple at Tirupattur through Mr. Raju’s blog.  He has been doing a great job.

Uthamar Koil

It is very rare to find temples where the Holy Trinity – Brahma Vishnu and Shiva are Worshipped in the same temple premises.    The fact is that there are not many temples dedicated to Brahma.  But it is also to be noted that there is no temple without a niche of Brahma.  Thirukandiyur near Tanjore and Bitchandar Koil near Trichy are two such holy places where the Holy Trinity is present.

Shiva is known as Bitchandar at Bitchandar Koil or Purushottamar Koil. Shiva’s consort here is Soundarya Nayaki or Vadivudai Nayaki.  Vishnu is known as Purushottamar and His consort is Poornavalli Thayar.  There are also separate shrines for Brahma and Saraswati.  This is a rare temple where the Holy Trinity is present with their consorts in six separate shrines.  Brahma himself is present as Guru.  All the seven Gurus viz Brahma Guru, Vishnu Guru, Shiva Guru, Sakthi Guru, Subramanaya Guru, Deva Guru and Asura Guru are present here.  This is a very important temple for worshipping Guru.

There is a story interlinking these two places.  An extension of this story also links the Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Tirupattur near Trichy.  According to a legend, Brahma became very arrogant because He was the Creator and also had five heads – just like Shiva.  This made him feel superior to Shiva.  Brahma once visited Kailasam to meet Shiva.  On seeing someone with five heads Parvathy concluded that it should be Shiva.  Without even having a look at the face, She started performing Paada Puja.  Brahma knew that Parvati was performing the puja thinking that He was Shiva, despite which He kept quiet and did not stop Her.  As this was happening Shiva came there and immediately understood the fact that Parvati had no idea that it was Brahma.  He was very angry with Brahma and plucked the fifth head.  Since then Brahma has only four heads and is known as Chaturmukha.  Shiva also stripped Brahma of the power and the responsibility of creation.  Now, Shiva was afflicted with Brahmahatti dosham (sin due to murder of Brahmin).  The fifth head of Brahma stuck to His palm and would not come off.  He started on a pilgrimage visiting various temples to be absolved of the sin.  He used the skull stuck in His palm as the begging bowl.  The begging bowl would not fill up and Shiva was very hungry.  At Bitchandar Koil, Lakshmi as Poornavalli Thayar got rid of Shiva’s hunger.  Since Shiva came here with a begging bowl and his hunger was satisfied, he is known as Bitchandar here.  Shiva noticed that though His hunger was gone, the skull was still stuck His palm. He was only partially absolved of His sin.  Read my next post on Thirukandiyur for the continuation of this story.

Dasaratha performed a yagna here and Rama was born to him. The belief is that the childless are blessed with progeny.  Devotees believe that as per Vishnu’s instructions Brahma does not refuse anything to His devotees who pray Him here.

Chariot festivals of Shiva & Vishnu are celebrated in the tamil months of Vaikasi & Chittirai respectively.  The Utsava murthy of Lord Ranganathan from Srirangam is brought to this temple once a year and is an important occasion.  Shiva and Vishnu are taken out in simultaneous procession in the tamil month of Karthigai.

This temple is located on the Northern Banks of Kollidam near the toll gate in Trichy, on the highway towards Musiri.  This temple is at a distance of about 10 Kms from Trichy Junction. This is on the outskirts of Trichy and is well connected by public transport.

Gnanavalli sametha Sara Parameswarar koil at Thirucherai is known as the temple for debt relief. Lord Shiva here is known by different names like Udayar, Senneriyappar and Sara Parameswarar.

Markandeya installed a Lingam here and worshipped the same.  Lord Shiva fulfilled his prayer for prosperity of the people of this region.  The Rinavimochaneswarar Lingam is in the outer praharam (Circumambulatory path).  The general belief is that worshipping Lord Shiva here helps improve the financial status and be debt-free.  It is just the superficial meaning. However there is a deeper meaning to this. Debt includes financial debts and not limited to it.

Most of us are not aware of the other debts.  According to scriptures, every human being is born with three types of debts. They are Deva rina (debt to God), Rishi rina (debt to Sages or Rishis) and Pitru rina (debt to ones ancestors). There are also well-defined means of repaying these debts. If a man does not repay these debts in his lifetime he will have another birth to repay. There is no escape from repaying these debts.

A man clears off his debt to God by performing poojas, visiting temples and most important of all – being good to fellow human beings & other living things and respect to nature. Any act of service goes to repay the debt to God.

The ancient Rishis or sages had framed a set of rules or Code of Conduct which are to be followed by all human beings. The second set of debts i.e. debt to Rishis can be repaid by following and adhering to the Code of Conduct laid down by the Rishis. A man can repay his debt to the Rishis.

Pitru Rina is repaid by performing Shrardham to ones ancestors and performing ones duty to his/her parents.

There also a set of rules called nithya karmas (daily duties) which are to be adhered to.  According to the scriptures, every Grihastha or family man has to perform these six duties as follows:

  1. Should wake up in the Brahma Muhurtham (one and a half hours before sunrise) – According to the scriptures, sleeping during the Brahma Muhurtham destroys all virtues and is a sin. At this time the environment is calm and without any disturbances. According to Ayurveda life-force is at its peak during this time when the atmosphere is ozone rich. The pale blue light that appears in the horizon during the mornings is full of energy. It is very good for both the mind and the body.
  2. Immediately on waking up, look at your palms because Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Brahma reside in our palms.  This is an auspicious beginning to the day and is supposed to bring good fortune.
  3. Pay your respect to Mother Earth.  Mother Earth bears the burden of all the living things in this world.  A biological mother takes care of us until we are grown up, but Mother Earth showers her care and love on us from our birth right through our lifetime until our death.  She provides us food, clothing and shelter.
  4. After this, having a glimpse of a mirror, gold, diamond, sandal, conch or mridangam (a South Indian percussion instrument) is considered auspicious.
  5. One must prostrate to father, mother & Guru Every day.
  6. Then purify your mind. Ensure that you only think good thoughts. Sprinkle water on your head after chanting the following slokam.

We should also take bath in the evening and worship.  We commit a lot of sins inadvertently during the day. We unknowingly kill a lot of small organisms while we walk, cook etc. In our evening prayer, we seek apology for such unintentional sins.

Mondays are very special for Lord Shiva.  Worship Kadan Nivartheeswarar, as Rinavimochanar is also known, for eleven consecutive Mondays here.  This would not be practical for most of us. However, when you visit the temple you can register your name (mention your birth star, gothram, names of your other family members and their birth star) for the archana (roughly translated as series of mantras or slokas chanted in praise of God) that will be performed on eleven Mondays.  The cost for this is Rs.165/-.  The prasadam is sent every week and will reach you every Wednesday/Thursday for eleven consecutive weeks.  At the end of the eleventh week, or at any later date, you may visit the temple and take part in an abhishegam (ablution) that is done every Monday. The timings of the abhishegam (ablution) are 6 AM, 11 AM and 6 PM. You can choose the time according to your convenience. The whole ritual takes about two to three hours. The cost of taking part in this abhishegam (ablution) is Rs.250/-.  Before this abhishegam (ablution), flower is distributed to the devotees and then taken back during the abhishegam (ablution).  This signifies that you have paid back your debts. Eleven is a special number for Shiva as there are eleven forms of Rudra Shiva.  Abhishegam (ablution) to Shiva is done with eleven materials as prescribed in the Shiva Agamas (Shiva worship rules).  The abhishegam (ablution) materials are

  • Gingely oil
  • Pancha kavyam (mixture of five ingredients i.e. milk, curd, ghee and cow’s urine)
  • Panchamrutham (mixture of five ingredients i.e. fruits, jaggery, ghee, honey and sugar)
  • Ghee
  • Milk
  • Curd
  • Honey
  • Cane juice
  • Lime juice
  • Tender coconut water
  • Sandal paste

There are a fairly large number of people that join in this worship ceremony. During this ritual, a priest recites the Dharidriya Dhahana Shiva Stotram over a public address system and the devotees are encouraged to repeat after him.  Thus worshiping at this temple absolves us of the three debts viz Deva Rina, Rishi Rina and Pitru Rina, apart from being blessed with prosperity.  Reciting the Dharidriya Dhahana Shiva Stotram thrice a day also is said to yield the same benefits. I have appended the same for ready reference.

On the 13th, 14th and 15th of the Tamil month Masi, the Sun’s rays fall directly on the Shiva Lingam.  It is a belief that Surya Bhagavan comes down here to worship the Lord on these days.  In the inner praharam, there are Sannidhis (sanctum sanctorum) for Amrithakadeswarar and Abhirami worshipped by Markandeyar.  There are also three niches of Durga viz. Shiva Durga, Vishnu Durga and Vaishnava Durga.

After worshipping Rinavimochanar, pray to Mahalakshmi and Jyeshtadevi.  This ensures that you stay debt-free for the rest of your life.

Perform Archana to Bhairavar on eight consecutive ashtami (eighth day from New moon or full moon) and Abhishegam (ablution) on the ninth ashtami. The belief is that, if you follow this procedure, success in your endeavours and victory in any litigation, will be yours.  Bhairavar also removes the navagraha dosham (malefic effect caused by a planet which is in an unfavourable position in ones horoscope).

Thirupungur is a small village about 2 kms from Vaitheeswaran Koil.  This place was once surrounded by Pungu trees and hence the name Thirupungur.

The Shiva lingam is one of the 64 Swayambhu (Self manifested) lingams and is supposed to have come from an anthill.  The Nandi here is also a Swayambhu. The presiding deity at this temple is Shivalokanathar and His consort is Soundaryanayaki.  Vinayakar is supposed to have dug a tank here for nandanar on Lord Shiva’s orders and is known as Kulam Vettiya Vinayakar. Devotees offering their prayers to Kulam Vettiya Vinayakar have all their wishes fulfilled.

Nandanar was a devout Shiva Bhaktha.  He was born into a low caste family and as a result was denied entry into any temples. His ambition was to visit the temple at Chidambaram.  He was working in the fields of a Brahmin Landlord. He would always put off Nandanar’s request to visit Chidambaram. Nandanar used to tell everyone that he will visit “Chidambaram tomorrow” (Thiru Nalai Poven). He was telling this over a period of time to everyone and he came to be known as “Thiru nali Povar”.

However, one fine day, he told Nandanar that he would be granted the wish if Nandanar were to achieve the impossible task of tilling all the forty acres of the paddy field overnight.  A disappointed Nandanar prayed to Shiva to grant him the wish of visitng Chidambaram.  Lo and Behold!! The next morning, the Landlord and Nandanar were both astonished to see that all the forty acres of the field had been ploughed!!!  The Brahmin immediately realised his folly and prostrated before Nandanar and pleaded forgiveness.  Nandanar set out to Chidambaram and on the way he stopped at Thirupungur to have a darshan of the Lord.  Nandanar was not able to have the darshan as Nandi was blocking his view.  He started singing in praise of Lord Shiva.  Lord Shiva wanted to know who the devotee was.  The dwarapalakas informed Him that it was Nandanar.  Immediately, Lord asked Nandi to move to a side to facilitate Him to have a clear view of Nandanar.  You can see the Nandi at this temple is shifted to a side.  Also the Nandi is not hanging out the tongue as is usually the case.  You can also see the dwarapalaks craning their necks as if to see in the direction of the entrance.

Once, there was debate between Shiva and Parvathi as to who was more charming.  They sought the opinion of Vishnu, who in turn asked Brahma to play the Judge.  Brahma rolled a dharba grass and threw it.  He said that an answer would be available wherever the grass fell.  The grass fell at Thirupungaur and became Pancha Lingam.  When Shiva and Parvathi came here, Shiva looked very handsome to Parvathi and Parvathi looked very beautiful to Shiva.  Their dispute was thus amicably resolved.  It is a belief that marital problems will be solved by worshipping at this temple.  Separated spouses will be reunited after visiting the temple.

According to archaeological evidence, Rajaraja Cholan had gifted twelve velis (measures) to this temple.  During his reign there was severe drought that resulted in famine and the king prayed to Lord Shiva to bring rain. Lord Shiva came in his dream and asked him to do special poojas for Sivaloganathar. Sundarar was present at the temple when the King came to offer his prayers.  The King requested Sundarar to sing in praise of the Lord and bring rain. Sundarar agreed on the condition that the King would donate twelve velis (measures) of land to the temple. Sundarar sang in praise of the God and there was a heavy downpour threatening to cause heavy damage to the country.  The King requested Sundarar to stop the rain.  Sundarar again laid the same condition.  The king gifted the land and immediately it stopped raining.

This is a very small village and you can’t expect any facility here.  Vaitheeswaran Koil is the nearest place where you can find good hotels to eat and stay.  If you have to rest a couple of hours before you visit the next temple, there are choultries at Vaitheeswaran Koil that allow you to use their facilities for a nominal payment of Rs 50/- or Rs. 100/-.

 

Thingalur is the sthalam for Chandran.  Thingal in Tamil means Chandran and hence the name Thingalur. The presiding deity is Kailasanathar and his consort is Periyanayakiamman.

When Lord Vishnu was distributing the Amrutham amongst the devas, at the behest of Sukracharya, one of the asuras in the guise of a deva consumed the nectar. Suryan and Chandran noticed this and complained to Lord Vishnu.  An angry Vishnu used his chakrayudham (discus) to cut the asura into two and threw them away. The head joined with a snake’s body to become Rahu Bhagavan. The body portion kept growing because the asura had consumed Amrutham.  This later joined with the head of a snake and became Kethu Bhagavan.  Now, Rahu and Kethu did not forgive Suryan and Chandran.  Rahu went after Chandran and started consuming him.  It is here that Chandran prayed to Lord Siva and got his blessings. Shiva blessed Chandran with the power to grow back to full size in 15 days after being consumed by Rahu.  That is why we have the waxing and waning moon.  Shiva also blessed Chandran by adorning Chandran on his forehead so that anyone who prays Shiva will have to pray Chandran.

There is also another interesting story pertaining to the waxing and waning periods of Chandran, which goes thus.  King Dakshan gave all his 27 daughters in marriage to Chandran. Those 27 wives of  Chandran are the 27 stars in Tamil Calendar. As Chandran’s favourite was Rohini and he spent most of his time with her, the others complained about this to their father. King Dakshan asked Chandran to treat all of them equally, which Chandran refused.  An angry Dakshan, cursed Chandran that all his beauty and brightness will disappear slowly everyday. A worried Chandran, on the advice of Lord Brahma, then performed penance on Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared before him and adorned his forehead with the crescent-shaped Chandran. Shiva then came to be known as Chandrasekaran also.  He blessed Chandran to regain his beauty and brightness slowly day by day.  This waxing period of the moon is called Sukla Paksham or Valarpirai.  Chandran gets back all his beauty and attains full brightness on Full moon day or pournami.  From Pournami to the full moon day he again starts loosing his beauty and brightness till the New moon day or Ammavasai.  This waning period of the moon is called Krishna Paksham or Theipirai.

There is another legend of Apputhi Adigal, an ardent follower of Thirunavukkarasar.  Apputhi Adigal was born in Thingalur. He indulged in lot of charity and social work in his village, all in the name of Thirunavukkarasar, whom he had not even seen. Thirunavukkarasar heard about Apputhi Adigal and visited the village.  Thirunavukkarasar accepted the invitation of Apputhi Adigal to have lunch at his place. Apputhi Adigal’s son died when he had gone to fetch a plantain leaf. Apputhi Adigal, going by the saying “Athithi devo bhava” put his personal sorrow behind and served food to his mentor.  Thirunavukkarasar came to know about the young boy’s death and carried the corpse to Kailasanathar temple in Thingalur.  Here he implored to Lord Shiva and brought him back to life.

Pooja:

Chandra Dosham causes concern in mother’s health, mental imbalance, skin and nervous disorder & jaundice.  Chandran blesses his devotees who pray here with wealth, mother’s well being, wife’s happiness, prosperity, marriage and offspring.  Mondays are special days for Chandran.  Offering of raw rice pudding mixed with jaggery, white flowers (White Arali) and white clothing are made to Chandran here.

Thirunallar – Saneeswaran Temple

Dharbharanyeswaraswamy or Dharbaranyeswarar temple at Thirunallar is dedicated to Saneeswaran or Saturn. Thirunallar in Karaikal, in the Union Territory of Pondichery, is one of the more famous and important navagraha temples. It is at a distance of 6 Kms from Karaikal town. This is one of the parivara sthalams. I shall explain what a parivara sthalam is in my post on Alangudi.

 

Though Saneeswaran here is very famous, the presiding deity is Dharbaranyeswarar. His Consort is Bogamartha Poon Mulayal or Praanaambikai. The lingam here is a self manifested Lingam or Swayambhu. The Sthala vruksham is Dharba or grass. This place was a forest of Dharba.  Dharba is a type of grass and aranyam means forest and hence the name Dharbaranyeswaraswamy or Dharbaranyeswarar for the Lord. Even today you can see the impression of grass on the lingam here. Thirunallar is one of the “Saptha Vidanga Sthalam”. The idols in these temples depict Lord Shiva performing one of His seven dance forms. It is believed that Lord Shiva imparted the knowledge of the Vedas & Shastras to Brahma here.  People pray to Swarna Ganapathy here to overcome financial problems.

Lord Surya was married to Usha or Light. Usha Devi was unable to bear the heat radiated from Surya and left her shadow or Chaya with Suryan while she herself stayed away. Saneeswaran is the son of Chaya Devi and Suryan. The very sigh tof Saneeswaran is dreaded and believed to be destructive. Suryan’s chariot is believed to have been destroyed when Saneeswaran as a baby first opened his eyes and looked at Suryan. Saneeswaran after intense penance on Lord Shiva attained the status of a celestial planet.

It is believed that Saneeswaran became lame when he was kicked by Lord Yama (Sani’s step brother – son of Surya & Usha) in a fit of anger. It is because of this that he is a slow moving planet, taking approximately two and a half years to move from one Zodiac Sign to another. Such a transit known as Sani peyarchi is very important and devotees from all over throng the temple to offer their prayers. Saneeswaran is believed to have a major influence on the course of ones life and also the most feared planet. The unique aspect here is that Saneeswaran is in standing posture with abhayahastha ie hand bestowing blessing.

Everyone experiences sade sati or ezharai sani in their life time. It occurs 2 to 3 three times in a life span as it recurs after approximately 30 years. Even the Lord himself is not exempt from the effect of ezharai sani. Once, Shiva hid himself in a remote cave to meditate and escape the effect of Sani. On his return he was informed by Sani that the Lord had went into hiding in the first place because of the influence of ezharai Sani. An astonished but pleased Shiva, declared to him to be Saneeswaran.  No other planet has the tag eswaran to the name.

There is a saying in Tamil “Saniyaipol Koduppavanum illai, saniyaipol keduppavanum illai” which translates to “There is none like Saneeswaran who can give a good life or ruin a life”. Actually, even at the worst of times Saneeswaran only delays but never denies.  The experience of going through the ezharai sani makes one mentally very strong.   He does not test us more than we can handle.  He affects a person based on his past deeds.  He is supposed to be Just. Interestingly, the two sons of Suryan, judge us and give us the palan or results based on our karma or deeds.  Saneeswaran does this during our lifetime and Yama does that after ones death.

According to a Legend, King Nala had not washed his feet properly while doing puja. Saneeswaran who was waiting for such an opportunity for about 12 years, immediately caught hold of him. This has probably prompted the tradition to wash our feet before entering the house. Getting back to the story of King Nala, under the influence of ezharai sani, he lost his kingdom, separated from his wife and children, had health problems and wandered around like a beggar. As per the advice of Bharadwaja muni he worshipped Dharbaranyeswarar at Thirunallar, after a dip in the holy tank here. It was then he was relieved of the effects of Sani. Pooja:

Those visiting Thirunallar should first have an oil bath in the Nala theertham. Some believe that you should leave behind a piece of your cloth near the tank. There are lots of shops around the tank, selling black towels, sachet of gingely oil etc. The tank is usually clean but on occasions you may not want to get into the water. After the bath worship the Vinayakar in the small temple nearby, break a coconut there and then proceed towards the Dharbaranyeswarar temple which is about 5 minutes walk from there.

Devotees offer Blue cloth and light Gingely oil lamp. Special Poojas are performed on Saturdays as Saturday is the day of Saneeswaran.

Recite these mantras facing west to get relief from malefic influence and get His blessings.

Saneeswara Gayathri: Pangupadhaya vidmahe Surya putraaya dheemahi, thanno Mandha prachodayath

Boarding & Lodging: The temple Devasthanam has accommodation facilities.  There are a few choultries in the Sannidhi Street.  A few hotels with air-conditioned rooms are also available starting from Rs.600/- per day.  This is a reasonably big town and hence there are quite a few eateries.  There are a few households in the Sannidhi street that have allocated a portion of their house for use of pilgrims.  If you want to rest for a couple of hours in the afternoons here they would charge a nominal rate of Rs.50/- to Rs. 100/-
