Arulmigu Giriraja Kannigambal Sametha Jalanatheswarar Koil in Thankkolam is one of the Padal Petra Sthalams. Thirugnanasambandar has sung in praise of the Lord here. There is a seperate sannadhi for Ambal.This temple was originally built by the Pallavas and later improvements and additions were made by the Cholas and Hoysalas.

There are a few interesting legends associated with the temple. One of the loegends is associated with kamadhenu, the celestial cow. Sage Udhadhi, the sun of Guru Bhagavan had a son named Theerkadar. One day he saw Kamadhenu near his ashram. He was conducting a yagam and asked Kamadhenu to be there. Kamadhenu politely refused saying that she cannot take part with Lord Indira’s permission. The infuriated sage cursed Kamadhenu tolose all its Divine powers. Kamadhenu in turn cursed the sage to lose his spiritual powers and be an ordinary man. Sage Udhathi was saddened by this and approached Sage Narada for advice. Sage Narada advised him to worship Lord Shiva for salvation. Accordingly, he worshiped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva then asked him to perform puja to Nandhi. He also asked him to perform abishegam to Him with the water that would spring from Nandhi’s mouth. The Sage did accordingly and got his son relieved from the curse of Kamadhenu. Kamadhenu too performed severe penance on the Lord and offered abhishegam with her milk. Lord Shiva was pleased with her devotion and restored her powers.

Another story is associated with Dakshan. Dakshayani was Dakshan’s daughter and married to Lord Shiva. There was an ego clash between the father-in-law and son-in-law. Dakshan planned to conduct an Yagna and did not invite Lord Shiva just to insult Him. However, Dakshayani wanted to visit the yagna. She went ahead and attended the yagna inspite of Lord Shiva not approving of the same. Dakshan insulted her too. This angered Lord Shiva and He sent Veerabadra to forcibly stop the Yagna. Veerabadra descended on the scene of the yagna with his army and created havoc there. He was instructed by Lord Shiva not only to cause destruction in the Yagna but also to destroy anyone who was in attendance. The attendees included the Devas and Lord Vishnu also. They were all killed by Veerabadra and his army. Lord Brahma then pleaded with Lord Shiva to pardon them and bring them all back to life. Lord Shiva acceded to Brahma’s request. However, since Dakshan’s head was severed and destroyed in the Yagna fire, he got the head of a goat and stayed so thereafter. Dakshan then realised his folly and cried out loudly to Lord Shiva here. The name of the village Thakkolam is derived from Dakkan + Olam meaning cry of Dakkan. Dakshan later performed the yagna in the prescribed manner and according due honour to Lord Shiva.

Meanwhile Dakshayani too was performing penance on Lord Shiva to pardon Her for going to the Yagna without the Lord’s approval. She made a Shiva Lingam out of sand on the banks of river Vrindha and performed penance on the Lord. There was flooding in the river and Dakshayani gently hugged the Lingam to save the Lingam from being washed away by the flood water. The impression formed by her chest can be seen on the Shiva Lingam.

This Shivalingam is not touched by anybody including the priests. He is known as Theenda Meniyar. It is believed that the Goddess is still hugging the Shiva Lingam and hence nobody touches it. There is no abishegam performed to the Shiva Lingam. The Shiva Lingam’s colour is white during the Dakshinayana period. Dakshinayana is the six month period from the Summer Solstice to the Winter Solstice. During Uttarayana which is between the Winter Solstice and Summer Solstice the colour of the Shiva Lingam is red.

Another interesting feature of this temple is that instead of the Lingothbavar as Koshta Murthy behind the Shiva Lingam one can see Mahavishnu in a sitting posture.

This is also a Guru Pariharam Sthalam. This is third after Abathsahayeswarar temple Alangudi and Medha Dakshinamurthy temple at Mayiladuthurai. Guru Bhagavan is in a very unique posture here. He is seen standing, with his left leg raised and placed on a platform. His head is slightly tilted to His left. Most of the idols in the koshta of this temple are slightly tilted to one side. It is very interesting, but I could not find out the reason for that.

Vada Aranyeswarar Temple at Thiruvalangadu is one the Padal Petra Sthalams. This temple is about 60 kms from Kathipara Junction. This place was once a forest of Banyan and hence the name Thiruvalangadu (Thiru + Alam + Kadu). Thiru means holy, Alam is Banyan and Kadu means forest. Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthy here. The Lord is facing East and His Consort Vandar Kuzhali Amman is in a separate shrine facing South. The theertham is Mukthi Theertham and the Sthala Vruksham is Alamaram or Banyan tree.

There are a few legends associated with this temple. One of the legends of Thiruvalangadu is connected with Karaikal Ammaiyar. She attained moksham at the feet of Nataraja here. It is also here that she sang her Mootha Tirupathigam. Karaikkal Ammaiyar is one of the 63 nayanmars.

Karaikkal Ammaiyar was born as Punithavathiar in a Vaisya (Business) family. Her father Danadathan was a successful and prosperous businessman. He was childless and he and his wife prayed to Lord to be blessed with a child. The Lord was happy with their devotion and blessed them with a daughter. They named her Punithavathy. Punithavathy grew up as a very pious child. When she attained marriageable age she was married off to Paramadattan, a wealthy businessman. They were both leading a peaceful and happy married life until one day Paramadattan sent two mangoes to his house. Punithavathy kept them away to serve them to her husband during lunch. Meanwhile, a Siva yogi who was exhausted due to hunger came to their house. As was the custom in those days, Punithavathy did a paadha puja him and offered him the mangoes as alms or bhiksha, since she had nothing else to give him at that time. She gave one to the Siva Yogi and reserved the other for her husband. Punithavathy served Paramadattan the mango. He liked it a lot and asked if he could have the other also. Since she had already given the other mango to the Siva yogi, she prayed to the Lord for help and mysteriously a mango appeared on the palm of her hand, which she served to her husband. When he tasted it he was amazed by its extraordinary taste. He was sure that this was not the mango that he had sent and asked her where she got such a sweet mango. Paramadattan could not believe when Punithavathy told the truth. He thought that she was concocting a story and challenged her to get another mango. She then prayed to the Lord and another mango appeared on her palm, which she handed over to her husband. The mango disappeared immediately. An astonished Paramadattan understood the greatness of his wife and set sail to a far away land on the pretext of going for trade. He returned and settled down in the Pandya Kingdom. He married another woman and lived happily. He even named his daughter Punithavathy after his first wife. When Punithavathy’s relatives came to know about this, they took Punathavathy to her husband. When Paramadattan knew about her impending arrival, he took his wife and daughter to meet her and feel on her feet. He explained the reason why he left her. He said that he saw Punathavathy as a Goddess rather than an ordinary human being. Punithavathy then prayed to the Lord to give her a demoniac form instead of her present one. She was immediately granted the wish. She then went on a Pilgrimage to Kailash. She traveled the last part of the journey on her head since she thought that placing her foot in Mount Kailash was disrespectful to Lord Shiva and a sin. Lord Shiva was highly delighted with Punithavathiyar’s dedication and He conferred the title of “Karaikkal Ammaiyar” on her. He also granted a boon to her. She wished that she should not have any more rebirth and in the event of a rebirth she should always be devoted to the Lord. She also wanted to be at His feet and witness His dance, always singing His praise. Lord Shiva asked her to go to Thiruvalangadu to witness His dance. Accordingly she went to Thiruvalangadu and witnessed His dance and also attained moksham.

Sumban and Nisumban were two demons who lived here were harassing the Devas or Demi Gods. They appealed to Goddess Parvathi to help them. Goddess parvathi created Kali to destroy the demons. When Kali killed the demons, every drop of their blood that fell on the ground would produce another demon. Kali had to drink all the blood of the demons She killed. Since Kali consumed the blood of the demons when she killed them, She became even more furious. Lord Shiva came here to pacify Her. Kali challenged Lord Shiva for a dance competition and said that she would give up the place to the Lord if He won. During the dance, His ear ring fell on the ground. Lord Shiva picked it up with the toes of His left leg and fixed it back in his ear, even while He was still dancing. Kali conceded that she could not dance so marvelously and declared Lord Shiva to be the winner. Lord Shiva declared that He only was equal to Her. He bestowed a boon on Her that all devotees coming to this holy place should first worship Her before worshiping Lord Shiva. This temple dedicated to Badra Kali Amman is just outside the Vada Aranyeswarar Temple.

This is the temple to be worshipped by people under Bharani Nakshathiram regularly. By doing so they would lead a peaceful and happy life. The other temple for people born under Bharani Nakshathiram is Sri Agneeswarar Temple at Thirunalladai, Tamil Nadu. It is even better if they visit these temples on the day of Bharani Nakshathiram.

Across the temple tank is the Thirumulanayaki sametha Muktheeswarar Temple in the Rasi Mandapam which has twelve pillars and the Janma Rasis and Navagraha images can be seen on those pillars. One has to either walk or go by two wheeler to reach this temple. There is a cement track along the periphery of the temple tank and you can comfortably ride by a two wheeler or probably even a three wheeler. It is a bit difficult to go by car. You have to take the mud track adjoining the cement track. I was adventurous and went by car and lucky not to have a flat tyre.

It is said that Mandhi the son of Saneeswaran was in penance and a lizard fell on him and it indicated a bad omen. He asked his father how he could get rid of the dosham. Saneeswaran asked him to pray to Lord Shiva and accordingly he prayed to Lord Shiva. The Lord appeared before him and asked him to do puja for a mandalam (48 days) at Thiruvalangadu. He installed a Lingam here and performed the puja to get rid of the dosham. The information on Mandheeswarar Parihara Puja is given in the image below in Tamil. It is recommed to do the parihara puja on Saturdays since Mandhi is the son of Saneeswaran who is the Lord of Saturdays. You can perform the puja to get rid of the malefic effects of ashtama Sani and Ardhasthtama Sani. It also gets rid of the malefic effects of Mandhi present in the wrong place of the person’s horoscope. The parihara puja is also believed to remove marriage obstacles, childless will be blessed with progeny, improvement of financial status and students will do well in their academics.

The legend goes that King Dasaratha was once ruling the entire world. Saturn was to make its transit to Rohini star after Krithigai. King Dasaratha was informed by sage Vasishta that this transit by Saturn to Rohini would be devastating for the whole world as it would be punctuated with famine and drought causing immense hardship to all the living beings. He asked Dasaratha to prevent it.

Dasaratha instantaneously set out on his chariot and arrived at the star, Rohini. He saw Saturn moving in his golden chariot in the direction of Rohini and tried to stop Saneeswaran by force. Saneeswaran, though impressed with the King’s valour said that just His looks can destroy anybody. However, king Dasaratha could not be harmed because of the powers that he had accumulated through severe penance. Dasaratha requested Saneeswaran to spare Bhoomadevi and all the creatures living on it. Saneeswaran was pleased by the King’s concern for his people. He asked Dasaratha to go to Thirunaraiyur and have a bath at the temple tank to have his wish fulfilled. King Dasaratha did accordingly and Saneeswaran gave a darshan to Dasaratha and agreed to his prayer. Consequently, Thirunaraiyur is an important place to worship Saneeswaran. This is a Sani dosha nivarthi sthalam. King Dasaratha also sang the following hymn to please Saneeswaran and chanting of this stotra is believed to relieve anybody of Sani Dosham.

Prostrations to Sri Ravinandana, who is the creator of three worlds, who is the self-manifested being, who is Hari the protector and Pinakin (Siva, bearer of the three pointed spear or pinaka), the destroyer, all in one, as well as the embodiment of the three-fold Vedas; Rig, Yajus and Saman.

Thus, Pippalada praises Thee (by chanting your ten names as contained in lines 1-3).

This is the only place where He is present with His wives Mandhi Devi and Jyeshta Devi and two sons Maandhi and Kuligan. Lord Rama and Anjaneya are believed to have prayed at this temple on their way back to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

The main deity of this temple is Ramanathaswamy and His consort is Parvathavardhini, just as in Rmeswaram. Many consider this temple equivalent to Rameswaram and those unable to visit Rameswaram visit this temple.

In the navagraha shrine, the Sun is at the centre and is seen with his two wives Usha Devi and Prathyushadevi. The rays of the Sun and the Moon fall directly on the Shivalingam sometime in the month of April.

Sri Agastheeswarar Temple at Kolapakkam, near Porur, is one of the Navagraha temples around Chennai, expecially Porur. This temple is Surya Parihara Sthalam. There is a seperate shrine for Suryan facing West. Suryan is accorded prime importance in this temple. The Lord here got the name Agastheeswarar because Agasthyar the Great Sage is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. His consort is Anandavalli. The Lord here was also worshiped by another Sage called Vakeesa and hence He is also known as Vakeeswarar.

The Sthala Vriksham is Arasa Maram or Peepal tree. The holy theertham is Amritha Pushkarni.

Kala Bhairavar is another very powerful Deity in this temple. Special puja is performed every Sunday to Kala Bhairavar during Rahu Kalam. Devotees believe that their wishes are fulfilled by worshiping Kala Bhairavar here for six consecutive Sundays. Offerings of red cloth, red flowers and wheat are made by the devotees to Suryan.

There are seperate shrines for Pillayar – known as Raja Ganapathy at this temple, Kasi Vishwanathar and Visalakshi, Kala Bhairavar, Lord Muruga with his wives Valli and Deivayani. The peacock which is the vahana or vehicle of Lord Muruga is made out of green coloured granite and is known as Maragadha Mayil. There is also the Rinavimochana Lingeshwarar who is supposed to free His devotees of all debts. According to scriptures, every human being is born with three types of debts. They are Deva rina (debt to God), Rishi rina (debt to Sages or Rishis) and Pitru rina (debt to ones ancestors). There are also well-defined means of repaying these debts. If a man does not repay these debts in his lifetime he will have another birth to repay. There is no escape from repaying these debts. According to inscriptions, this temple has been built and rebuilt several times at various times by many Kings of various Dynasties. Some of them are Raja Raja Chola I, Raja Raja Chola II, Aditya Chola, Rajendra Chola and Sundara Pandyan. Vijakanda Gopala a Telugu Chola King and Vijaya Maharaja of Sumatra have also patronised and contributed to the temple at various times. The area surrounding temple also seems to have been the seat of Budhdhist activity in this region. Archeological evidence pointing to this has been unearthed by the ASI.

The temple was almost in ruins in 1998 before it was rebuilt. I have posted some snaps of how the temple looked prior to 1998.

Location: Kolapakkam is on the outskirts of Chennai. It can be reached from Mount Poonamalee road. At the Ramavaram signal you can take a left turn into Manapakkam and this road will lead to Kolapakkam which is about 3 Kms from there. This can also be approached from Porur – Kunrathur Road through Gerugambakkam which is the neighbouring village and site of one of the other eight Navagraha temples around Porur. This can also be reached from Pozhichalur neighbouring Pammal and Pallavaram which is where the Saneeswaran temple is located. One has to cross a small causeway over Adyar river, so this route may not be very ideal during the rainy season. Moreover, these internal roads are not very well maintained.

Financial abundance is of great importance to every human being. Good Health & Happiness (peace of mind) are the other two of the three foremost things that man prays to his Creator to bestow him with. Padikkasunathar temple at Alagaputhur near Kumbakonam is one such temple where the presiding deity blesses His devotees with financial prosperity. The main deity here is also known as Swarnapureeswarar. His consort at this temple is Alagammai or Azhagammai. The deity taken out in processions (Utsavar) during festivals is Somaskandar. The sthala vruksham is vilva. The Shiva Linga is a swayam bhu or self manifested. Alagaputhur is on the banks of the river Arasalar. The old name for this place is Arisilkaraipudur. This three tiered temple is believed to be about 2000 years old.

The priest at this temple was a staunch Shiva devotee who performed the daily pooja with great devotion along with all the customary offerings. Famine and poverty struck the whole region that was once prosperous. In spite of his poverty and the difficulty he had in making the ends meet, he never shirked from his “responsibility” of performing the daily poojas to the Lord. Please with his devotion, one night the Lord appeared in his dreams and granted a boon.  The priest wished that the village must become prosperous once again and that he himself should have enough to continue performing the daily poojas without any hurdle. As per his wish Lord Shiva left him one gold coin at the steps of the temple everyday. The priest used this to take care of the villagers and also to perform the daily pooja. Soon the famine was gone and the village became prosperous once again.

The descendents of that noble priest are still the priests at this temple.  The priest performed the padikasu pooja for us. We handed to him an even number of ten rupee notes for the pooja. After performing the pooja the priest gave us back half of them (that is the reason for taking even number of currency notes). The money retained by the priest is utilized for temple maintenance etc. The priest asked us to preserve the currency notes he gave us and also issued detailed instructions on performing poojas at home using these. Devotees believe that performing this ritual will bring prosperity.

Lord Muruga here is very unique. He is seen with the Conch and Discus that one normally associates with Mahavishnu. The story goes that it is the Conch and Discus given by Lord Vishnu to Muruga when He set out to wage a war on the demons. He is seen sitting on a peacock with His consorts Valli and Deivayanai. Since Muruga appears with both His consorts He is known as Kalyanasundara Shanmuga Subramanyar. The decoration in the background is in the form of Om.

Talking of Om, there is a story linking this temple to the Swaminatha Swamy temple at Swamimalai. Once Lord Brahma, the Creator was asked how he created life in the Universe. Lord Brahma replied that he used the Pranava Mantra. When Lord Muruga further asked Lord Brahma the meaning of the Pranava Mantra, Lord Brahma was stumped for an answer. An angry Muruga imprisoned Him and stripped Him of the responsibility of creation. He took upon the responsibility Himself. Lord Shiva approached Muruga and requested Him to free Brahma and reinstate Him as the creator. He also wanted to know the meaning of the Pranava Mantra. Lord Muruga taught Lord Shiva the meaning of this mantra at Swami Malai. Later, when Lord Shiva appealed to Lord Muruga again, He relented. He was also remorseful for having punished and insulted an elder for his ignorance. Lord Muruga performed penance on Lord Shiva at this temple and sought forgiveness. Lord Shiva pardoned Him and said that while pointing out of mistakes committed by the elders can be accepted, you should take sufficient care to ensure that it does not offend the elders.

This is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams and all the four Great Saints have sung hymns in praise of the Lord at this temple.

This village is just about 2.5 Kames from Nachiyar Kovil on the Kumbakonam-Nachiyar Kovil-Tiruvarur route. It is about 7 Kms from Kumbakonam. This temple is almost on the State Highway. It is just a two-minute walk from the highway. The bus services are frequent and is well connected with the important places around here.

Thiruvelliangudi near Kumbakonam is one of the 108 Divya Desams. This place is very important for the vaishnavites and visiting Thiruvelliangudi Divya Desam is equivalent to visiting all the 108 Divya Desams. The Moolavar, Kolavilli Raman is present in a reclined posture and facing east. His Consort is Maragathavalli Thayar. The holy waters here are Sukra theertham, Brahma theertham, Parasurama theertham and Indra Theertham. This temple is believed to be four Eras (Yugas) old. In the Krita Yuga this place was known as Brahma Puthiram, Prasuram in the Treta Yuga, Chandra Nagara in the Dwapara Yuga and Bhargava Puram in the Kali Yuga. This temple is one of the Vaishnavite Navagraha Parihara sthalams around Kumbakonam. This is the Parahira sthalam for Sukran or Venus. Bhargava is another name of Sukran and hence the name Bhargavapuram. Sukran is known as Velli in Tamil and hence the name Velliangudi. But how is Sukran connected to this temple. The story goes thus.

Mahabali, the grandson of Prahalada was a righteous and generous demon king. He was respected by his subjects who were all happy under his rule, as there was no crime, poverty or diseases. He is believed to have ruled the present day Kerala. He became ambitious and was on a mission to conquer the whole world. He defeated Indra and captured the Deva Lokam. Indran approached Lord Vishnu and sought His help. Lord Vishnu took the Vaman Avatar and came down to the Earth. Now, Mahabali was a staunch devotee of Vishnu and was very generous. Like Karna of Mahabharatha, if someone asked him for something, he would always give. Mahabali had the habit of fulfilling the needs of a few Brahmins after his morning prayers. That fateful day, Vishnu as Vamana was amongst the Brahmins present. He asked Mahabali for 3 steps of land. Sukracharya, the Asura Guru, tried to dissuade Mahabali from granting the boon. Sukracharya did his best to stop the boon being granted. He took the form of a bee and blocked the mouth of the Kamandalam (a type of Jug, usually carried by rishis) from which Mahabali would pour water to signify the grant of the boon.  Vishnu used a dharba to clear the blockage in the Kamandalam and in the process blinded Sukracharya in one eye.  Vamana then took the Vishwaroopam and covered the whole universe in two steps.  The 3rd step was placed on Mahabali. Thus Mahabali was vanquished. Vishnu was please with Mahabali’s righteousness and granted him the boon of visitng his people once every year. This is the day that is celebrated as Onam by the people of Kerala.

Meanwhile, Sukracharya who had lost his vision in one eye prayed at a lot of Vishnu temples and asked for forgiveness. It is believed that it was here that he was given back his sight. Sukracharya also wished to the Lord that He should make this place as His permanent abode and bless all devotees who visit this temple with good eyesight and cure all eye ailments. Visiting this temple is equivalent to visiting all the 108 Divya Desams as per Vishnu’s boon to Sukracharya. Vishnu also married Sukracharya’s daughter Maragathavalli as per his wishes.

This temple was then built by the Asura architect, Mayan. He decided to build the most beautiful temple ever. He wanted it to be better than the Vaikunta built by the Deva architect Vishvakarma.  Vishnu was pleased with Mayan and gave him a darshan as a bow and arrow wielding Rama with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi. Interestingly, at that point in time, Ramavatar was yet to happen. As per the request of Mayan, the Lord is present in the same form. A unique feature of this temple is the sight of Garudazhwar with Sangu and Chakram. Vishnu is believed to have given them to him, while giving the darshan to Mayan. This is the only Divya Desam where Garudazhvar is seen with four hands. Garudazhavar with four hands is seen as though he is awaiting instructions from the Lord and is ready to hand over the Sangu and Chakram to Him. Prayer at this temple will result in career growth and employment for the unemployed. There is an oil lamp in the garba graham called Netra Deepam which burns eternally.

Thiruvelliayangudi is located at a distance of about 16 Kms from Kumbakonam. It is very close to Thirupanandal. Direct bus service to the village is not frequent. Route No. 2 from Kumbakonam via Anaikudi goes to this village. Hiring an auto from Thirupanandal or Suryanar Koil is the preferred option.

Vaitheeswaran Koil is my family’s “kula deivam”. A few months back my uncle told me about Adhi Vaidhyanatha Swamy Temple near Vaitheeswaran Koil and mentioned that we should first pray at that temple before we offer prayers at Vaitheeswaran Koil. I visited this temple at Mannipallam village, in August 2010 and it was partially built. The main deity is Vaithyanatha Swamy and His consort here is Thayyalnayaki. Mannipallam village is about 6 Kms from Vaitheeswaran Koil. This village is about 2 to 3 kms from Thirupungur. Enquiries with the locals to know more about the temple drew a blank. I had an opportunity to visit this temple again in early October 2010. I enquired at Vaitheeswaran Koil and one of the priests told me that there were in fact five Vaithyanatha Swamy temples around Vaitheeswaran Koil and that they had featured in the latest edition of Sakthi Vikatan. Someone overheard my conversation with the priest and directed me to the temple office and meet Mr. Ramani, who is an electrician there. Mr. Ramani hails from Mannipallam and what he told me was very painful. He said that the village people could not rebuild the temple due to lack of funds and the temple was in ruins for a long time.

He was not sure if there were any tablets/inscriptions available to authenticate that this was the original site of Vaitheeswaran Koil. “Most of  the granite slabs with the inscriptions have been used by the villagers in their paddy fields to build bunds. Some others have been taken away to be used in washing the clothes”. Some of the idols from here had been removed and used in some nearby temples. He said that anti social elements started using the temple premises for their nefarious activities. According to Mr. Ramani, on one occasion when a village elder questioned these people’s behaviour, one of those hooligans smashed the idol of Ambal with a heavy object and Ambal’s hand was broken in the process. Within a fortnight or so of this incident, the person whose broke Ambal’s idol was involved in an accident and lost one of his hands. This, according to Mr. Ramani, made the villagers believe very strongly in the temple Deity. The villagers then decided that the temple has to be re-built. Efforts towards this was initiated around 2002.

When they started to re-build this temple and the Shiva Lingam was removed, they found a second Shiva Lingam below this. Both the Shiva Lingams are now present in this temple. Mr. Ramani gave me the contact details of one Mr. Paramanathan, also a native of this village and a TN State Govt official. Mr. Paramanathan has been the champion for building the temple. Over the last eight years or so there has not been much progress made, mainly due to lack of funds.

Mangalambigai Sametha Mangalyeswarar Koil at Edaiyathumangalam is the temple that people born under Uthiram star have to visit regularly.  This is the third temple that I am writing about in this series of “Birth Star Temples or Nakshathiram Temples”.  This temple is special to me as my forefathers hail from this village – my native place.  Unfortunately, during my last visit in January, my camera malfunctioned and I am unable to post photographs of this temple.  I shall post a couple of snaps after my next visit to this temple.

This place is called Edaiyathumangalam as it was once situated between two rivers; Aaru means, river and Edai means, in between. Mangalyeswarar (as Lord Shiva is known at this temple) is present with His Consort Mangalambigai.  Mangalyeswarar is facing East while Mangalambigai is facing South.  This is quite a small temple and has shrines for Vinayakar, Mangalya Maharishi, Dakshinamurthy, Bitchandar, Ardhanareeswarar, Chandikeswarar, Durgai, Nandi and Navagrahas.  Lord Muruga is also present with His Consorts, Valli and Deivayanai.

The Legend here is connected with Mangalya Maharishi who was born under Uthiram Nakshathiram.  Marriages of Agasthiyar, Vashishtar and Bhairava Maharishis were conducted under his aegis.  He is supposed to have all the powers of his penance in his palms.  He is the Guru of the Angels that bless the marriages.  At the auspicious time that is suitable for marriage, these Angels are believed to be visiting this temple to pray to Mangalyeswarar and re-energise their power to bless married women with a long & happy marital life.  Their blessings are always at the peak during Uthira nakshathiram.  It is because of this reason that the Kalyana Utsavam or the Celestial Wedding of the God and Goddess are held during Uthiram nakshathiram day in the Tamil month of Panguni.  Panguni Uthiram is an important part of the calendar in most temples.

Young unmarried women – especially those born under Uthiram – pray at this temple seeking Lord’s blessing for early marriage, removal of hurdles causing delay in marriage, long & happy marital life.  Mangalya Maharishi is the First invitee when the marriage alliance is finalised.  Devotees place the First Invitation of the marriage at the feet of Mangalya Maharishi and invite him to grace the marriage and bless the young couple.  Mangalya Maharishi is believed to attend the marriage and bless the newly weds.  After the marriage the newly weds visit this temple for thanks-giving.  Married women pray for longevity of their Husband’s life.  Elderly and destitute who have been deserted by their children are reunited with their family after worship here. People suffering from chronic pain in their feet are relived of their ailment after prayers to Mangalyeswarar.

Edayathumangalam is at a distance of about 18 Kms from Trichy.  There are a couple of buses viz Route nos 75 & 75 A from Trichy Chathiram Bus Stand to Lalgudi that pass through Edaiyathumangalam. Edaiyathumangalam is at a distance of about 5 Kms from Lalgudi.  Autos charge about Rs.70/- for a one way trip from Lalgudi.

Those going by their own mode of transport need not go up to Lalgudi.  You will find an arch on the right hand side just after Valadi, take a right turn there and this road will lead you to Edaiyathumangalam.

My next three posts are all interlinked.  These are about Bitchandar Koil, Thirukandiyur and Tirupattur. Before I start, I should acknowledge that I came to know about the temple at Tirupattur through Mr. Raju’s blog.  He has been doing a great job.

Uthamar Koil

It is very rare to find temples where the Holy Trinity – Brahma Vishnu and Shiva are Worshipped in the same temple premises.    The fact is that there are not many temples dedicated to Brahma.  But it is also to be noted that there is no temple without a niche of Brahma.  Thirukandiyur near Tanjore and Bitchandar Koil near Trichy are two such holy places where the Holy Trinity is present.

Shiva is known as Bitchandar at Bitchandar Koil or Purushottamar Koil. Shiva’s consort here is Soundarya Nayaki or Vadivudai Nayaki.  Vishnu is known as Purushottamar and His consort is Poornavalli Thayar.  There are also separate shrines for Brahma and Saraswati.  This is a rare temple where the Holy Trinity is present with their consorts in six separate shrines.  Brahma himself is present as Guru.  All the seven Gurus viz Brahma Guru, Vishnu Guru, Shiva Guru, Sakthi Guru, Subramanaya Guru, Deva Guru and Asura Guru are present here.  This is a very important temple for worshipping Guru.

There is a story interlinking these two places.  An extension of this story also links the Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Tirupattur near Trichy.  According to a legend, Brahma became very arrogant because He was the Creator and also had five heads – just like Shiva.  This made him feel superior to Shiva.  Brahma once visited Kailasam to meet Shiva.  On seeing someone with five heads Parvathy concluded that it should be Shiva.  Without even having a look at the face, She started performing Paada Puja.  Brahma knew that Parvati was performing the puja thinking that He was Shiva, despite which He kept quiet and did not stop Her.  As this was happening Shiva came there and immediately understood the fact that Parvati had no idea that it was Brahma.  He was very angry with Brahma and plucked the fifth head.  Since then Brahma has only four heads and is known as Chaturmukha.  Shiva also stripped Brahma of the power and the responsibility of creation.  Now, Shiva was afflicted with Brahmahatti dosham (sin due to murder of Brahmin).  The fifth head of Brahma stuck to His palm and would not come off.  He started on a pilgrimage visiting various temples to be absolved of the sin.  He used the skull stuck in His palm as the begging bowl.  The begging bowl would not fill up and Shiva was very hungry.  At Bitchandar Koil, Lakshmi as Poornavalli Thayar got rid of Shiva’s hunger.  Since Shiva came here with a begging bowl and his hunger was satisfied, he is known as Bitchandar here.  Shiva noticed that though His hunger was gone, the skull was still stuck His palm. He was only partially absolved of His sin.  Read my next post on Thirukandiyur for the continuation of this story.

Dasaratha performed a yagna here and Rama was born to him. The belief is that the childless are blessed with progeny.  Devotees believe that as per Vishnu’s instructions Brahma does not refuse anything to His devotees who pray Him here.

Chariot festivals of Shiva & Vishnu are celebrated in the tamil months of Vaikasi & Chittirai respectively.  The Utsava murthy of Lord Ranganathan from Srirangam is brought to this temple once a year and is an important occasion.  Shiva and Vishnu are taken out in simultaneous procession in the tamil month of Karthigai.

This temple is located on the Northern Banks of Kollidam near the toll gate in Trichy, on the highway towards Musiri.  This temple is at a distance of about 10 Kms from Trichy Junction. This is on the outskirts of Trichy and is well connected by public transport.

The Sivasuryanarayana temple at Suryanar Koil is one of the Navagraha temples and is dedicated to Suryan.  This temple dedicated to Suryan has shrines for each of the other planets as well.  The legend says that Kalava Munivar had the rare ability to see the future.  One fine day, he realised that he was soon going to be affected by leprosy.  Since the Navagrahas controlled all the aspects of ones life, he prayed to the Navagrahas and sought to be saved from the disease.  Pleased by his devotion, the Navagrahas granted his wish.  On coming to know of this, Brahma was furious because nobody had the right to change the destiny of a person.  He cursed all the nine planets that they will have to undergo what Kalava munivar was destined to, and hence all the nine planets were affected by leprosy.  The Navagrahas apologised and requested to know how they could overcome this curse.  Brahma advised them to go the Thirumangalakudi and worship Prananatheswarar, at Vellerukkakadu, who alone could help them.  After worshiping Prananatheswarar and his consort Mangalambigai, they installed an idol of Vinayakar a little away from there and started their penance.  By God’s grace they attained papa vimochanam (salvation from their sin).

Kalava Munivar, for whom the Navagraha had undergone all the trouble, as a mark of gratitude, raised a temple at the same spot where the Navagrahas had performed their penance.

The presiding deity in this west facing temple is Suryanarayana in a chariot like vimaanam, representing the sun’s chariot.   Sivasuryanaraya is in a standing position with his two consorts, Usha & Prathyusha (Chaya).  There are also shrines dedicated to Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi and Guru Bhagavan in the sanctum.  Shrines for the other celestial bodies are located outside of the sanctum.  Vellerukku (Madar Plant) is the sthala vriksham.  Pillayar made out of the Vellerukku is sold in the shops here.  It is a very prized possession and protects from the evil forces.

Thirumangalakudi

Once King Kulothunga’s Minister Alaivanar was building a temple from the tax collected without obtaining the King’s permission. The King had him beheaded when he came to know about this. As his death wish, the minister requested that he be cremated in Thirumangalakudi.  His wife prayed to the Mangalambikai at Thirumangalakudi and brought back her husband to life.  Women pray to the Goddess here for long life and the well being of their spouse.

Method of Worship

Devotees are first required to have the darshan of Prananatheswarar and Mangalambigai at Thirumangalakudi before visiting Suryanar Koil.  This temple is just 1 km from Suryanar Koil, and is situated in the same village.  The method of worship at this temple is very different from other temples.  We should first worship the Kol Vinai theertha vinayakar.  He is called by this name because He helped the navagrahas get rid of their problems.  Thus, Kol Vinai Theertha Vinayakar is a VERY IMPORTANT deity.  We then worship the Nataraja in narthana mandapam.  Then at the main sanctum worship Visalakshmi & Kasi Vishvanthan (this is a small lingam on your left hand side as you approach Suryan’s Shrine) before worshiping Suryan.  After worshiping Suryan, worship Guru Bhagavan who is facing Suryan.  Now, the circumambulation or the pradarshanam procedure is very different from other temples.  We now go in an anticlockwise direction and worship Saneeswaran, Budhan, Angarakan, Chandran, Kethu, Shukran and Rahu before worshiping Chandikeswarar.  Then we proceed in a clockwise direction and return to worship Kol Vinai Theertha Vinayakar.  This may seem very confusing but there are signboards at the temple to guide the devotees.  After this prostrate or do a namaskaram near the dhwajasthambam.  Then it is recommended to do 9 pradarshanams of the outer praharam.   I have made a layout diagram for your reference.

A favourably positioned Sun in the horoscope manifests as intelligence, perception, strength of will and character in the inmate. It creates endurance, stamina, vitality, positive spirit, direction, courage, conviction, confidence, leadership, independence and straight- forwardness.

An unfavourably positioned Sun results in lack of intelligence, poor perception, weakness of will and character. Surya’s worship benefits include strength, health, good eyesight, intelligence, relief from skin ailments and long life. Cool water is used for Abhishegam.  Offerings of wheat & archana with red lotus please him. Devotees who are unable to visit any of the other Navagraha temples can perform the necessary parihara poojas to the respective planet at this temple.
